FAQs
What are tessellated tiles?
Tessellated tiles are individually cut geometric tiles that are laid in repeated patterns to create a seamless decorative design. They are commonly used in heritage restorations and contemporary projects, creating visual harmony on floors, pathways and feature areas.
What are tessellated tiles made from?
Tessellated tiles are made from fully vitrified porcelain, which means they absorb less than 0.5% of their weight in water. This makes them incredibly strong, long-lasting and resistant to scratches, impact, acid and moisture. Full-bodied tiles (where colour runs through the entire tile) are especially valuable in high-traffic areas.
Where are your tiles made?
All of our tessellated tiles are designed and manufactured on-site at our Sydney factory. This system ensures consistent quality and allows for customisation based on your design requirements.
What makes your tessellated tiles different from others on the market?
Unlike generic tiles, our products are made with historical accuracy, which means every detail, from colour choice to pattern layout, reflects the original design principles found in Australia’s Victorian, Federation and Art Deco periods. At the same time, we offer the flexibility to adjust patterns, shapes and colours to suit your project. This allows you to maintain architectural integrity while customising the design to match your space and personal style.
What types of homes are tessellated floor tiles suitable for?
While tessellated floor tiles are ideal for any type of home, they are particularly suitable for those inspired by the Victorian, Federation and Edwardian periods. They also work well with modern designs, adding character to your house’s interior or exterior.
What are the most common areas in which to install tessellated floor tiles?
Tessellated floor tiles are typically used in hallways, verandahs, entryways, footpaths, bathrooms and kitchens. They’re also popular in commercial spaces such as shopfronts and cafes. Additionally, they are often specified for restoration or heritage-sensitive projects.
Can I customise the tile patterns and colours?
Yes. We offer over 70 tessellated patterns and 20 colours to select from. You can work with our team to adjust layout, shape combinations and colour palettes to suit your project. One-on-one design consultations and workshop sessions are available.
Can I mix tessellated tiles with other tile styles?
Absolutely. You can blend tessellated patterns with subway tiles, mosaic borders or decorative accent tiles. This approach allows for creative expression while maintaining cohesion. Our team can guide you through combinations that work both aesthetically and structurally.
What is the role of borders in tessellated tile design?
Borders frame the main tessellated pattern and define the geometry of the space. A simple border can stabilise a busy pattern, while a decorative border can act as a feature. All Tessellated Tile Factory (TTF) borders are adjustable in width by modifying rectangular strips, making them flexible for different layouts.
How are tessellated tiles installed?
Installation is done piece by piece using sand and cement screed. A minimum joint size of around 1 mm is maintained, and tiles must be carefully centred to keep the pattern symmetrical. Due to the complexity of the designs, installation requires careful planning and precision to achieve the best result.
Are tessellated floor tiles low maintenance?
Yes. Their non-porous surface requires only minimal cleaning with a neutral pH solution. They do not absorb allergens, emit fumes or require sealing (if porcelain). This makes them ideal for both busy households and allergy-sensitive environments.
Can I see your tiles in person?
Yes. You can visit our Sydney showroom. No appointment is needed. Free street parking is available, too. You’ll be able to view our collection of tessellated tiles in Australia and speak with our knowledgeable team.
